2nd writeshop on reframing pre-service teacher education curriculum held
RITQ, Teacher Education Council (TEC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) continued to collaborate in reframing the pre-service teacher education curriculum by conducting the second development writeshop last 5–7 March 2025 at Hop Inn Hotel, Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
The Commission on Higher Education-Technical Panels for Teacher Education (CHED-TPTE), chaired by Dr. Edizon A. Fermin, led the development work which included shaping the curriculum framework and mapping outcomes with the Philippine Qualifications Framework. Professional education courses were also conceived.
TEC regular members Dr. Jestoni P. Babia (zonal representative for Visayas), Dr. Thomas Edison E. Dela Cruz (science teachers’ representative), and Dr. Garry C. Cachuela (mathematics teachers’ representative), also contributed to the discussions.
Dr. Jennie V. Jocson, TEC Executive Director V, shared with the plenary the Council’s directions on reframing teacher education in light of the national directions and expectations set by ongoing reforms in the Philippine education system.
Providing salient details on the phased implementation of the revised K-to-10 curriculum and the ongoing revisions on the senior high school (SHS) curriculum were DepEd representatives Dr. Isabel A. Victorino, Chief Education Program Specialist of Bureau of Curriculum Development, and Dir. Ma. Guia M. Del Valle-Ramoso, Director III from the Office of the Secretary.
Dr. Richard R. Jugar, professor at the University of San Carlos and the subject area group coordinator for teacher education in Champion of Measuring and Comparing Achievements of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education in Asia (CALOHEA) project, also shared relevant inputs on student workload and authentic assessment and how these should be considered in any curriculum development work.
As one of the activities under Philippine Normal University’s (PNU) Research Initiatives for Teacher Education (RITE), this writeshop aimed develop a pre-service teacher education curriculum that produces quality Filipino teachers.
As the project’s research arm, RITQ provided research inputs and designed a development process that aimed to elicit informed decision points from the education experts and leaders.
